Benjamin Andrew Stokes is an English international cricketer who was born on June 4, 1991 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He is the only child of Deborah and Gerard (Ged) Stokes, a former rugby league footballer and ex-coach.

At age 12, Stokes and his parents moved to England, at the time his father was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club. He then grew up in the small West Cumbrian town of Cockermouth.

Stokes attended Cockermouth School, where he played for Cockermouth Cricket Club. He later dropped out of state school when he was 16 years old with just one GCSE, in physical education. A 15 year old Stokes won the North Lancashire and Cumbria League Premier Division Title with the club in 2006.

In 2009, he made his List A debut in domestic cricket for Durham at The Oval. At the event, Stokes managed to take the wicket of the highly experienced batsman Mark Ramprakash with only his third delivery in professional cricket.

Same year, he played in two youth Tests against Bangladesh U19, where he made a half-century and took a few wickets. Stokes was called upon by New Zealand to play in the 2010 Under-19 World. In that event, he scored a century against the India Under-19 team.

Stokes made his One Day International debut on 25 August 2011 against Ireland. A month later same year, he made his Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) debut against West Indies. He has gone on to earn 221 caps in ODIs and 58 caps in T20Is respectively.

At the 2013-14 Ashes series, Stokes made his Test debut against Australia in the second Test. In England’s second innings in the third Test, he scored the first Test century, scoring 120 runs in 195 balls. Overall, he scored 279 runs in the series and took 15 wickets.

Stokes became part of the Melbourne Renegades’ team of Australia’s Big Bash League in January 2015, replacing Jesse Ryder who w as out as a result of an injury.

Stokes was signed by Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the 2017 season. He made his maiden Twenty20 century against Gujarat Lions, hitting 103 not out from 63 balls, including hitting seven fours and six sixes. He was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2017 season.

During the 2018 season, he moved to a rival Indian Premier League club Rajasthan Royals after he was bought for £1.7million, the most expensive player in the 2018 IPL auction. He made great strides for his new club with immediate effect.

Stokes played only one match during the 2021 IPL because he had suffered a finger injury which ruled him out of the entirety of the season. He did not participate in the 2022 edition mainly to focus on his country’s Test team.

Stokes was bought by Chennai Super Kings to play in the IPL 2023 season for INR. 16.25 Crore (£1.6 million) in the IPL auction held on 23 December 2022.
