Williamstown CEO Ashley Baker told the club is in grief over the loss of the giant of the Seagulls.
“On behalf of the Williamstown Football Club I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the Round family,” Baker said in a statement on the club’s website.
“The Seagull family is mourning the loss of a club legend and a gentleman who gave so much to our great game and our wonderful club.
“A dual premiership-winning player, J.J Liston Trophy winner, Norm Goss Medal recipient, three-time Gerry Callahan Medal winner, and WFC Team of the Century and Hall of Fame inductee says it all.
“Barry will be missed by so many and we have lost a true champion of the game”.

Barry Round Cause of Death
The 72-year-old AFL star Barry Round has passed away. According to the reports, Barry Round official cause of death was organ failure. He went into palliative care early this week and died in a Gold Coast hospital this morning, Saturday December 24, 2022.
This sad news arrived a day before the Christmas making his friends and family in grief. In 2001, he was elected into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. In 2003, he was selected to be a part of Sydney’s Team of the Century.
Who was Barry Round?
Barry Round was born in Nilma, West Gippsland, and attended Warragul in the Latrobe Valley Football League before being recruited by Footscray in 1969.
In round 1 of that season, wearing the number 14 jersey, he made his senior VFL debut with the Bulldogs against Fitzroy at Princes Park. It was Ted Whitten’s 300th senior VFL game.
Round participated in all 20 games of his rookie campaign and scored 136 goals in 135 senior appearances for Footscray from the start of 1975 to the end. He participated in one final for the Bulldogs, a 69-point loss to Collingwood at Waverley in the 1974 elimination final.
In 1976, he moved to South Melbourne, where he played for ten seasons until Barry Round led the team from 1980 to 1984 and won the Best and Fairest award twice in Sydney.
He served as Williamstown’s premiership captain and coach in 1986 and 1990, and in 2014, the club honored him with its first Hall of Fame. That same night, he was given Legend status.
After making his VFL/AFL debut with Footscray in the first round of the 1969 season, Round played in 328 games throughout his career.
Round’s best individual career honor came in 1981 when he tied Fitzroy for first place on the Brownlow Medal leaderboard with 22 votes alongside Fitzroy’s Bernie Quinlan.
Barry Round had a remarkable playing career from 1986 to 1991, appearing in 110 games and scoring 103 goals for the Seagulls until suffering a knee injury in round seven of 1991 at Sandringham, which ended his long and illustrious senior football playing career at the age of 41.
