Sathianathan was an attacking midfielder and during his career as a footballer, he had stints with a number of clubs including; NSCRC (Negeri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club), Negeri Sembilan FA, and Malacca FA
He also was part of the Malaysian squad that won a bronze medal at the 1983 Sea Games. Sathianathan’s coaching journey began in 1992 with Negri Sembilan.
He coached several teams including Kelantan, the Armed Forces, Felda United, Selangor, and Sarawak United. He also coached and guided the National Under-23 squad to the 2007 Merdeka Tournament victory.
Sathianathan again coached Harimau Malaya from 2007-2009 and had immense success as the coach of several teams in the Premier and Super Leagues.
He guided Kelantan to win the Malaysia Cup in 2010 and was also in charge when Armed Forces and Felda United were crowned Premier League champions in 2012 and 2018, respectively.
Due to his performance, Sathianathan gained massive recognition from the football fraternity and was named “Coach of the Year” in 2010, 2012, and 2017.
His last job as a coach was with Sarawak United last year (2022) where he had taken a four-month break to receive treatment as he was said to be battling with cancer.
Sadly, the former Harimau Malaya coach had died. Sathianathan passed away at 65 on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, after almost a year-long battle with cancer.
The news was confirmed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Media, Communications and Public Relations Committee chairman, Christopher Raj.
In a statement, Christopher said Sathianathan died at 1.25 pm today (Tuesday, July 18) at the University Malaya Medical Centre. He was fighting cancer for almost a year and was hospitalized for the past two to three months”
Sathianathan was also the Malaysian Football Coaches Association (PJBM) president. He was often sought out by sportswriters for his views on issues in the local football arena.
