Arsenal Sack Eight Staff In Major Backroom Shake Up

Arsenal have sacked eight members of the backroom staff in a major shake up led by former defender Per Mertesacker.

The headline exit is head of youth scouting Steve Morrow as Arsenal look for a revamp behind the scenes. Morrow represented the Gunners as a player from 1988 to 1997.

And the Daily Mail reports that eight members of staff are set to lose their jobs. Former Chelsea forward Dave Lee, Kevin Beadell and Dan Rice, who each held recruitment positions at the Emirates, are said to be on their way from roles in the requirement team. While the departure are yet to be ratified, they are expected to leave the club shortly.

Mertesacker is leading the changes after being appointed as the club’s academy head last year. This marks the biggest move from the former centre-back.

The German retired from football in 2018 before taking up a backroom role at Arsenal after struggling with injuries towards the end of his career.

The changes come at a time when first team boss Unai Emery is also under pressure, and according to some reports, he has two games to save his job.

The Spaniard has seen results slip and some fans are calling for his head. Arsenal let a one goal lead slip on Saturday to draw 1-1 with Wolves. That result saw them drop six points behind Chelsea in fourth place.
