Amou Haji was not his real name, but an endearing nickname given to elderly people. Haji lived between a makeshift shack and a hole in the ground in the village of Kahrar-e Dejgah, Fars.

Amou could often be found roaming around the streets covered in soot and he lived in a shack which was built by local villagers. The hermit also believed that fresh food could make him sick and he would smoke a pipe filled with animal excrement, the Tehran Times reported.

Due to his fear of soap and water, he did not bathe in over 50 years, but was pressured into doing so in late 2022, shortly before his death. He died on 23 October 2022, in Kahrar-e Dejgah.

After Haji passes away, the unofficial record might be awarded to another Indian guy who lived the majority of his life without ever taking a bath.

The Hindustan Times claimed in 2009 that a man named Kailash “Kalau” Singh, who hailed from a town located outside of the holy city of Varanasi, had not showered for more than 30 years in an effort to assist in resolving “all the problems plaguing the nation.”
