Bandt attended his first protest in high school, against a nuclear-powered ship’s visit to Fremantle. From 1987 to 1989, when he was in his mid-teens, he belonged to the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Later, Bandt said he had left the party and blamed the Higher Education Contributions Scheme for Hawke and Keating’s withdrawal of free higher education. According to Bandt, the alteration “started making education so expensive and putting people in debt”.

Bandt was a student activist and Left Alliance member at Murdoch University. He said that Leon Trotsky’s ideas had inspired him while he was in college. As the head of the student union, he vigorously advocated for free education and increased living expenses for students.

In 1995, Bandt was a student and called the Greens a “bourgeois” party. He said that communists “cannot fetishize alternative political parties, but should always make some materially based assessment about the effectiveness of any given strategy come election time” and that backing them might be the best course of action. Following his graduation from college, Bandt worked for student unions. He practiced industrial and public interest law in Parkville, Vic toria, before his election to the legislature in 2010. He eventually became a partner position at Slater & Gordon, representing unions as clients. In 2004 he decided to become a Green.

He researched problems confronting outworkers in the textile industry and published essays on the connections between labor regulations and anti-terror legislation. According to Bandt, he also represents coal miners and firefighters who are “dealing with privatization.” A study titled “The Wages of Fear: Labour Laws and Terror” was released by Bandt in 2006.

Working part-time at Slater & Gordon to finish his PhD at Monash University in 2008, under the guidance of cultural theorist Andrew Milner, Bandt’s thesis was titled “Work to Rule: Rethinking Pashukanis, Marx, and Law”.

It reads: “This thesis is an attempt to rethink Marxist legal theory.” His dissertation from 2012 looked “at the connection between globalization and the trend of governments to take away peoples’ rights by suspending the rule of law”, stating that he “reviewed authors who write about the connection between the economy and the law from across the political spectrum”, and ultimately argued, “that governments increasingly don’t accept that people have inalienable rights”.

For three years, his thesis was under embargo in the hopes that it would be published. In a 2009 study, Bandt said that neoliberal “strong states” have utilized emergencies, including the war on terror and the global financial crisis, to “undermine basic rights”.

In the 2007 election, Bandt was preselected to run as the Greens’ candidate in the federal division of Melbourne against Lindsay Tanner of Labor, the sitting Shadow Minister for Finance. Tanner went on to win the seat.

After the preferences were distributed, Bandt defeated Liberal candidate Andrea Del Ciotto and received 22.8 percent of the primary vote, a gain of 3.8 percent, and 45.3 percent of the two-candidate preferred vote. He was the most successful candidate running for a House of Representatives seat from a minor party nationwide.

Citing family matters, Richard Di Natale stated on February 3, 2020, that he would be leaving his position as leader of the Greens and retiring from politics soon. Not long after, Bandt declared his candidacy for the position of leader.

He was elected without a challenge on February 4. Larissa Waters was elected as co-deputy without any opposition, and Nick McKim emerged victorious as the second co-deputy, defeating Sarah Hanson-Young and Mehreen Faruqi. Political journalist Paddy Manning has referred to Bandt as the first Greens leader from the Left wing of the party.

Claudia Perkins, a former Labor employee who currently works as a part-time yoga instructor, is Bandt’s partner. Between them, they have two daughters.
