ABUSE OF PRESCRIPTION OF EVERYDAY MEDICINE – Fed Poly Ede Students As Case Study

Am not into Drug, I have aversion for it. This manuscript, is not to cause a malign to any product of drug but Extended to our youths on campuses to Charge them, more emphasis on Federal Polytechnic Ede Students that live away from watchful – eye, that is the School Hostel.

Yesterday night was a night tending to impair me, listen carefully…

I was with a drug – Addicted guy Yesterday night at Ede who offered me a Coca – cola,had I know,I will not have accepted the offer, I drank it to later discovered that the drink have been mixed with drugs .

Drug Abuse amongst our youths in tertiary institution especially in Federal Polytechnic Ede and the new trend is becoming a significant medical, psychological, social and economic problem facing the nation. More worrisome is the increasing number of tertiary institution students who are getting involved in drug abuse, these are the future leaders of Nigeria, who proposed a youth in the helm of Affair of Nigeria Political Scene, then What will be the future of the nation if it’s supposedly future leaders are drug addicts?

Abuse of prescription of everyday medicine amongst our youths – Federal Polytechnic Ede students as a Case Study, is now so worrisome, It sounds unbelievable that every day drugs like paracetamol, tramadol, codeine-based cough syrup among others can even be abused, believing that regular intake of it gives extra strength and energizes the addict, gives extra strength to boost their sexual urge on campus and pitiful enough the sexual aspect of this is what campus ladies defines as true love that give satisfaction, though some are influenced by peer groups to engage in this while others take it just to show that they have arrived as ‘bigger boys and girls’ and have now achieved independence from the watchful eyes of their parents, undoubtedly, this is the ingenuity of the Nigerian youth at its worst.

We say cocaine and heroine are hard narcotics, what about codeine-based cough syrups, gum, lizard faeces, rephnol, tramadol, stale urine, pawpaw leaves, paracetamol and a host of other drugs that can be purchased from any pharmaceutical or patent store?

However, you will agree that drug abuse is associated with anti social vices among students such as cultism, thuggery, racketeering, and armed robbery. This means that the problem of drug abuse among students is the problem of everyone – the parents, the school, other students and the general public.

The role of counseling unit in institutions cannot be overemphasized,thus counseling units in institutions of learning should be resuscitated with capacity to provide intensified drug counseling and students/youths should be knowledgeable that we are the product of our actions,drug addiction is a brain disorder in nature and the choices we make, however, determine to a large extent our happiness or our unhappiness, because we have to live with the consequences of our choices .
