Gary Moeller Death Cause: Gary Moeller, the hand-picked replacement of Bo Schembechler at the University of Michigan and former Detroit Lions head coach, has died.

The Michigan football program announced the news on Monday, saying Moeller died this morning.

Gary Oscar Moeller was a retired American football coach who was the University of Michigan’s head coach from 1990 to 1994. During his five seasons at Michigan, he won 44 games, lost 13, and tied three, for a winning percentage of.758.

In the Big Ten Conference, his teams won 30 games, lost 8, tied 2 for a.775 winning percentage, and won or shared conference titles in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Andy Moeller is the son of former Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller.

Moeller resigned in May 1995 when tapes of his alleged drunken outburst at the now-defunct Excalibur restaurant in Southfield, Michigan, were leaked following his arrest on a charge of disorderly conduct on April 28.

Lloyd Carr, who had worked with him at both Illinois and Michigan, took over as his successor. From 1980 to 1989, Moeller and Carr both played under UM coach Bo Schembechler.
