Geof Motley was born near Alberton Oval, home of Port Adelaide Football Club, and grew up supporting Port Adelaide. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 1992 Australia Day Honors “for services to sports administration and the rules of Australian football”.
For eight seasons (1959–1966), Geof Motley managed the League’s then-dominant team, including a stint as captain-coach from 1959 to 1961. He was the only one to appear in all nine top teams, ministering to the Magpies from 1954 to 1965. He played a total of 258 matches for Port between 1953 and 1966 and also represented South Australia 28 times.
During his career, Geof Motley was never dropped from a league team and was never reported. During his playing career in league football, not being reported for a foul was a rarity for a player, as at the time a certain amount of cross-breeding or roughhousing was considered illegal.
Geof Motley was named Port Adelaide’s best and fairest player in 1958, 1959, 1963 and 1965; and won the Magarey Medal in 1964. He was captain-coach of the Magpies’ premiership-winning team in 1959.
