Callender was born in Sacramento, California in the United States of America. In his youth, he played soccer for Cap FC United and Placer United. From 2013 to 2016, he was a member of the San Jose Earthquakes Academy.

For the California Golden Bears, Callendar started playing collegiate soccer in 2016. Callender made 54 appearances over the course of four seasons, recording 16 shutouts.

He was selected to both the All-Pac-12 First Team and the United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Far West Region First Team for the 2017 campaign.
