He played at the hooker position. He played for Linwood before he first represented Canterbury in 1969.[1] In 1977, he captained the All Blacks to a series win over the British Lions and played three games for the World Invitation XV in South Africa.

In the 2006 New Year Honours, Norton was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to rugby.
In 1973 and 1974, Norton was awarded the Tom French Cup for the outstanding Māori player of the year.

Norton, a hooker, made 61 appearances for the All Blacks including 27 Tests.

Norton led the All Blacks for nine matches, including the 3-1 series win over the British and Irish Lions in 1977.

He made his Test debut against the 1971 Lions and his final appearance for the All Blacks was against the same team, in the final match of the series in Auckland.

“I still wake up and can’t believe I’ve been an All Black,” he told Stuff in 2012.

Norton played a total of 197 first-class games, including 82 for Canterbury, 61 for New Zealand and three for a World Invitation XV in South Africa in 1977.
