Luther Ronzoni Vandross Jr. known simply as Luther Vandross was born on April 20, 1951 at Believe Hospital, in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. He was the fourth child of Mary Ida Vandross, a nurse and Luther Vandross Sr., an upholsterer and singer.

Luther Vandross grew up in Alfred E. Smith Houses public housing development in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Getting his own phonograph at age 3, he taught himself to play the piano by ear.

He later became a lead singer of the group Change, which released its Gold-certified debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner/RFC Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much, in 1981.

In 2003, he wrote the song “Dance with My Father” and dedicated it to his deceased father; the title was based on his childhood memories.
