Vida Blue throughout his career played a number of teams including; Oakland Athletics (1969–1977), San Francisco Giants (1978–1981), Kansas City Royals (1982–1983), and San Francisco Giants (1985–1986).

Blue was among the players ordered by baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth in 1985 to be subject to random drug testing for the rest of their careers.

When Blue joined the San Francisco Giants in 1985, he re-signed on another one-year deal in 1986, finishing his career going 10–10 with a 3.27 ERA in 28 appearances, all starts, at the age of 36.

On April 20, he won his 200th career MLB game. Blue signed with the Oakland Athletics for the 1987 season but announced his retirement in February 1987.

After a successful baseball career, Blue became a baseball analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area, the TV home of the San Francisco Giants.

After his 2005 arrest in Arizona on suspicion of DUI for the third time in less than six years, Blue was sentenced to six months in jail after failing to complete probation.

But he was told he could avoid incarceration by spending time in a residential alcohol treatment program.
