Prior to entering politics, Ong Ye Kung worked in the Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore Workforce Development Agency, National Trades Union Congress and Keppel Corporation. He was also the principal private secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong between 2002 and 2004.
He made his political debut in the 2011 general election as part of a five-man PAP team run by Aljunied GRC, but was defeated by the Workers’ Party where the PAP team won 45.28% of the valid votes. . In the 2015 general election, he ran again and won at the Sembawang GRC as part of the PAP team of five. The PAP team won 72.28% of valid votes.
Prior to becoming Minister of Health, Ong Ye Kung served as Minister of Education from 2015-2020, alongside Ng Chee Meng from 2015-2018 and Minister of Transport from 2020-2021. From 2020 until 2021, he also co-chairs the ministry’s multi-hit task force set up by the government to manage Singapore’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 1 October 2015, Ong Ye Kung was appointed Senior Minister of State for Defence and Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills). On 1 November 2016, he was promoted to Second Minister for Defence while concurrently holding the portfolio of Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) alongside Ng Chee Meng, who was Minister for Education (Schools). In 2017, he then moved a Bill in Parliament to confer the Singapore University of Social Sciences autonomous status.
On 27 July 2020, Ong Ye Kung relinquished his portfolio as Minister for Education and succeeded Khaw Boon Wan as Minister for Transport, as well as the Anchor Minister of Sembawang GRC. On 23 April 2021, he was appointed co-chair of the multi-ministerial committee formed on 22 January 2020 to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. Following a Cabinet reshuffle on 15 May 2021, he relinquished his portfolio as Minister for Transport and succeeded Gan Kim Yong as Minister for Health.
Ong Ye Kung was considered by many to be one of the most likely candidates to succeed Heng Swee Keat as leader of the fourth-generation (4G) team, however it was ultimately revealed that Finance Minister Lawrence Wong had the most support compared to the other candidates.
