Anthony Wameli, the head of the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) legal department, passed away after being hospitalized in 2021.

How Did Anthony Wameli Die?

Anthony Wameli’s death was revealed on Wednesday afternoon by Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, the head of the NUP party. The statement reads,

“Very sad day! Just learned of the untimely passing of our dear brother and Head of our Legal Team, Comrade Wameli Anthony from the U.S. where he’s been admitted for treatment. Details will be provided in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” says, Kyagulanyi.

Wameli was taken to St. Anthony Medical Center in Kasangati, Wakiso district in 2021 as a result of issues relating to his stomach.

His wife, Olive Wameli, stated at the time that the lawyer was unable to speak. The lawyer was taken out of the nation a few weeks later in June 2021 to the Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts in the United States of America.

Who was Anthony Wameli?

Anthony Wameli was a leading Human rights lawyer. He served as a head of the legal department for the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a former candidate for Namisindwa County MP.

Mr. Wameli, a pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya and a well-known human rights attorney, gained notoriety in 2017 when he took on the case of defendants charged with the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

In court, Wameli defended a number of NUP supporters as well as other members of the public, including Jamilu Mukulu, a former ADF rebel leader, suspects in the killing of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, and suspects in the attempted murder of Gen. Katumba Wamala.

Due to legal maneuvers, the human rights attorney was named criminal defense lawyer of the year by the Uganda Law Society in September 2021.

He founded and served as a managing partner of Wameli and Company Advocates.

His law company is also representing Kampala celebrity Charles Olim, commonly known as Sipapa, and his wife, Shamilah Nakiyemba, who is accused of aggravated robbery and money laundering before the Makindye magistrates court.

He is the founder and managing partner of Wameli & Co. Advocates, which has raised more than 300 advocates and now has eight attorneys on staff.

He represented suspects facing terrorism charges during his more than ten years of the legal profession.

Prior to leaving, he worked for almost three years as a Magistrate Grade One in the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nakasongola.

Geoffrey Turyamusiima, Wameli’s closest friend, then revealed to reporters that Wameli had been suffering from severe peptic ulcers for weeks, which he claimed may have contributed to the worsening of his health.

He was sent to Kampala a few weeks later and then to Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, where he reportedly received a stage-four colon cancer diagnosis. His cancer also spread to his lungs, lymph nodes.

He died after battling with the cancer for nearly 2 years on Febraury 8, 2023. Tributes flooded online after the demise news spread out.
