Miguel Barbosa Huerta Cause of Death
The governor of Puebla had diabetes for a number of years, which resulted in several health issues, including the amputation of his right foot in 2014.
Following his amputation, Barbosa said that his denial of the illness and failure to take care of himself despite being diagnosed were the causes of the complications that resulted in the loss of his foot.
His foot infection resulted in sepsis, a gallbladder operation, and the amputation of his foot. Despite receiving the required care, Barbosa’s health was impacted by his diabetes, which led to ophthalmic issues like glaucoma.
Although his communication team informed at 11:00 that Barbosa had been admitted to the hospital and was stable, the exact reason for his death is still unknown.

Miguel Barbosa Huerta Early Life
Barbosa was born on September 30, 1959, in Zinacatepec. When he was ten years old, his family relocated to Tehuacán, where he remained until he came to Mexico City to attend the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
He returned to Tehuacán after earning his law degree from the UNAM and established the legal business Barbosa Huerta y Asociados.
Miguel Barbosa Huerta Political Career
Barbosa joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in 1994 and rose to the position of state leader and national political councillor of the party by 1998.
Two years later, he quit his law business and joined the LVIII Legislature as a federal deputy, serving on the Public Safety, Navy, and Parliamentary Practices committees.
Barbosa served in several PRD posts after completing his three-year tenure in the Chamber of Deputies, including as a member of the party’s National Political Commission from 2008 to 2012. During this period, he also served as the national coordinator of the PRD faction Nueva Izquierda.
Miguel Barbosa Huerta Senate (2012 -2018)
Barbosa was elected by the PRD to the Senate of the Republic in 2012, and he served in the LXII and LXIII Legislatures from 2012 to 2018.
He coordinated the PRD party in the Senate from 2012 to 2017. After endorsing Andrés Manuel López Obrador as the party’s 2018 presidential candidate following López Obrador’s expulsion some years earlier, he resigned from the position rather than being fired.
Barbosa presided over the Senate from 2014 to 2015, the last year of the LXII Legislature, making history as the first time communists have ever led both houses of Congress.
Miguel Barbosa Huerta Gubernatorial campaign 2018
A position normally held by the party’s eventual gubernatorial nominees, Morena appointed Barbosa as its state electoral organization coordinator in October 2017, six months after joining the party, after winning an internal vote.
Barbosa ran as the candidate of the Juntos Haremos Historia (Together We’ll Make History) coalition in the 2018 gubernatorial election but was defeated by Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo, whose PAN-led alliance received four more percentage points of the vote.
The Superior Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal upheld Alonso’s victory in early December 2018 after Barbosa supporters filed a lawsuit challenging the election results.
Alonso, unfortunately, passed away in a helicopter crash in December 2018 shortly after being sworn in.
Barbosa would subsequently assert that he had won the election, saying in late 2019 that,
“they stole it from me, but God punished them”
without using their names.
A special election was called to fill the position because the death occurred during the first two years of the governor’s mandate.
Barbosa received 44.6 percent of the vote for the Juntos Haremos Historia alliance, which ran Barbosa as its candidate and replaced the disbanded Social Encounter with the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM).
The turnout in the election was the lowest for a gubernatorial poll in the state in twenty years.
