3 Reasons Why Another Strike Is Inevitable In LAUTECH

The academic and non-academic staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomosho seems to be warming for another strike action again.

The university students are certainly not expecting the institution to start another strike again after going on a 16-month industrial action between 2016 and 2017.

But with the ways things are going in the institution, the academic and non-academic staff might have to consider going on strike again to press home their demands.

Here are three reasons the university gate may be shuttered again:

1. The recent non-academic staff’s threat

On Friday, July 3, 2018, the university’s Joint Action Committee comprising of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities NASU held a press conference where it threatened to start an indefinite strike if the university issues are not addressed.

2. Non-payment of workers arrears and lack of fund for the school

The non-academic union members have also recently been raising their voices on the need for the Oyo and Osun State governments that own the institution to fund the school adequately and also address the workers’ 10 months’ salary and promotion arrears.

However, the perceived body language of Oyo and Osun state government towards the university has been a great concern for the management of the university as the two governments that own the institution do not seem to be showing enough commitment.

3. Impending ASUU strike

As LAUTECH students prepared for their second-semester examinations which started on Monday, July 30, 2018, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to start another strike action.
